The manner in which attorneys select a jury drastically changed when the United State Supreme Court issued its ruling in Batson v Kentucky. Before Batson, the trial attorney enjoyed unfettered discretion to challenge a certain number of prospective jurors. After Batson, such challenges could not be exercised based on the jurors race, ethnicity or other group characteristics. This new multi-media course takes you through a detailed analysis of the rules stemming from Batson. You will learn what are, and what are not, acceptable bases for challenging a potential juror. How to make and respond to Batson objections at trial. Then finally, we will discuss issues of professional responsibility. Lecturer: Michael Reinhart Recently a guest lecturer on Ethics and Law at California State University Fresno, Mr. Reinhart is a 25 year veteran trial lawyer with more than 100 jury trials completed. His trial record includes the first ever successful prosecution of the infamous Hells Angels under California’s criminal gang statutes, a death verdict in the double homicide case of People v Potts and the first ever introduction of “chemical fingerprinting” evidence at trial in California. Mr. Reinhart is presently a Chief Deputy District Attorney and has taught seminars to the California District Attorneys Association, California probation departments, and numerous law enforcement agencies.
